John Baird visited Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums, to get a glimpse of the informal sector that makes up the bulk of India’s economy. These businesses generate almost $700 million in revenues annually and their products exported to many parts of the world. This, despite little social infrastructure, an inadequate water supply and poor social conditions.
John Baird visited Zaatari Camp in Jordan, which is housing thousands of Syrian refugees. Canada pledged $10 million in aid, including $6.5 million for Jordan. Baird also met with his Jordanian counterpart, Nasser Judeh, and with King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Today, we reflect on the great things that make our nation strong and free. The world looks to Canada as an example of how a society can be inclusive and prosperous.
The start of Spring and a new year in the Persian calendar, Nowruz means “a new day”. Minister Baird’s sincere hope is that the people of Iran see a new day soon.
